 1. Central Air Conditioning: 

Typically found in larger and newer homes it cools the entire premises from a central location – hence the name “Central Air Conditioning”. Air circulates through supply and return ducts and is pushed through registers like ceiling grills or vents. Or there may be vents in the floor or wall in the room where you want to get the cool or warm air.

It is worth noting that if you are in the thinking about installing this type of air conditioner it normally requires a lot of planning and expertise. It can often be difficult to “retro-fit” into an already built property. 2. Split System Air Conditioning:

 As its name implies a split system air conditioner has two parts. One is normally attached to a wall inside your home or office and the other is mounted outside on or near a wall to keep the heat generated by the A/C away. The outside unit is really the work horse of the system and comprises the compressor, condenser coil, expansion coil and the capillary tubing.

The inside unit is the smart operating system where you get to control whether you want heat or cold and how hard you want the air to blow and at what temperature. You’ll usually control this with a remote of some kind.

Both Central Air Conditioning and Split System Air Conditioning can be, and most often are these days, Reverse Cycle Air Conditioners. That means, the unit can be used to cool in summer and warm in winter all through the one energy efficient unit.

3. Window Air Conditioner: 

These units are typically used to cool one particular room and are installed in the window of a room – as it’s name implies. They can sometimes be installed in the wall, however that is far more challenging and not often used these days. If your house is small or you only want to cool or warm one room, like your bedroom at night for example, then you could consider installing this kind of an air conditioner. 4. Portable air conditioners.  
The name says it all. You may be renting or want to be able to move the air conditioner into different rooms or find it is a more affordable solution for you. Depending on the unit it may be difficult to move around as they can be very large and heavy, so check this aspect out if that is what you want to do. They also need a duct to be connected with a window using a special kit that is supplied as they suck in warm humid air, then cool and dehumidify it and blow it back into the room as cool air. 

They are generally not very efficient and struggle to keep rooms cool, especially on those really hot days and are typically noisier than other kinds of air conditioners.
